Every year, millions of dental and facial injuries happen because of sports-related trauma. Whether you're playing basketball, soccer, baseball, or any contact sport, your smile is at risk. Even non-contact activities can lead to unexpected collisions or falls.

A sports mouthguard is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your teeth, cheeks, lips, tongue, face, and jaw. This removable appliance is made of sturdy, comfortable plastic that fits snugly over your teeth—usually the top teeth, though we can design one to cover both arches if needed.

If you or your child wears braces or has certain dental work, a mouthguard becomes even more important. We'll design one that provides the right coverage and protection for your specific situation.

Three Types of Mouthguards

You'll find three main options on the market:

  • Stock mouthguards – Pre-formed and ready to wear right out of the package
  • Boil-and-bite mouthguards – Softened in hot water, then molded to your teeth at home
  • Custom mouthguards – Professionally designed and fabricated by your dentist

While the first two offer some level of protection, custom mouthguards from our office provide the best fit, comfort, and protection. They're made from precise impressions of your teeth, so they stay in place, don't interfere with breathing or speaking, and offer superior shock absorption.

At Smile Care Dental Group, we'll help you choose the right mouthguard to keep your smile safe—whether you're a weekend warrior or a competitive athlete. Protecting your teeth now can save you from painful injuries and costly dental work down the road.

Common questions
Do I really need a custom mouthguard, or will a store-bought one work?+

Store-bought mouthguards offer some protection, but custom mouthguards fit better, stay in place, and provide superior shock absorption. They're also more comfortable, so you're more likely to actually wear it. If you're serious about protecting your smile, a custom mouthguard is the best investment.

Can I wear a mouthguard if I have braces?+

Absolutely—and we strongly recommend it. Braces can cause serious cuts to your lips and cheeks during impact. We'll design a mouthguard that covers your braces and provides extra protection for both your appliances and soft tissues.

How long does a custom mouthguard last?+

With proper care, a custom mouthguard can last several seasons. For growing children and teens, you may need a new one as their teeth and jaws develop. We'll check the fit at your regular dental visits and let you know when it's time for a replacement.
